Waka Quest

The flagship vessel, Haunui, is berthed at Auckland’s Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum and is a waka hourua, a double-hulled ocean voyaging waka, able to take twenty-five passengers on short journeys. ‘Waka on the Waitemata’ is a two-and-a-half-hour authentic Māori cultural experience. Participants gather in the Hawaiki Gallery at Voyager, then enjoy a traditional welcome and karakia on board the waka. They then ‘buddy-up’ with a crew member to man the hoe and prepare some kai. Participants hoist the sails and sit with the navigator who tells them about recent journeys of the seven voyaging waka, and demonstrates how it is possible to sail 20,000 km navigating just by the stars. For further information see: www.wakaquest.com

Te Toki Voyaging Trust

Haunui sails with the mission of revitalising waka culture and knowledge within the Pacific; protecting the environment, promoting awareness of the oceans, pollution and climate change. Haunui is part of a conversation, a kōrero about reviving the traditions of our Pacific ancestors. If you would like to know more about the Te Toki Voyaging Trust visit: www.haunuiwaka.org

inspiration
Wayfinding requires that we become ‘explorers of our world’ seeking to discover and shine light upon that which is not seen. To become an explorer of the world is to set sail beyond the compass of our existing knowledge and to traverse uncharted waters in ourselves and in the world.
